Circus Company welcomes a new artist on the label: the Homewreckers. Named after a track by Southern Soul legend Sam Dees, the production collective from Germany has been moving and breaking new ground between Detroit techno, abstract funk and melancholic disco music since 1995. Their debut album Amercian Ruhr has been released on Unique Records in 2008 and creates an absolutely distinctive sound which seems to come straight out of a from a feverish dream populated by the ghostlike figures of Larry Graham, Juan Atkins, Frank Hutter, Bernard Edwards, Erik B or Al Green.

The Not My Business EP perfectly shows how the Homewreckers flow on these two original tracks. You feel the funk, you feel Detroit and you feel a deep and unique sense of music. Cherry on the cake, you got a remix from San Francisco based artist Dave Aju who is back on the label after his much acclaimed album Open Wide released in 2008.

Not My Business isn’t their first shoot on the label as they were already part of last months Snuggle & Slap Circus Company compilation with a brilliant « Live-Version » of Chicago Urban Blues.

Celebrating 10 years of refining its highly personal vision of underground electronic dance music, Paris’ Circus Company presents Snuggle & Slap, a two-CD compilation balancing contemporary house music with more idiosyncratic submissions. It’s more than just a label sampler: many of the artists included here appear two or even three times, having been afforded the opportunity to think beyond the dancefloor and experiment with new sounds, unusual styles, and secret passions. Hushed funk, feathery beats and spongy textures characterize Snuggle, while Slap [cont. reading]

And so does guest remixer Mike Huckaby. Anyone into any sort of deep electronic music has got to own this. “Home Wreckers (Rework)” and “Wreckers (Delight)” on Side A both have the perfect balance of lush pads, a driving kick drum and an awesome scruffy and raw bassline that makes you feel like you live in a perfect world for the duration of the track. Great house music with sublime references to jazz, soul and disco. Dancefloor madness on another level, completely.

Side B comes with two remix works of acclaimed DJ and producer Mike Huckaby, a dance music purist extraordinaire from Detroit. He is mostly known for his recordings on Harmonie Park, under the ‘Deep Transportation’ title. Mike has been working on different production projects with artists such as Moodymann, Theo Parrish, Rick Wilhite or Cris Simmonds. His reinterpretation of the Homewreckers’ “Close Your Eyes ´Til The Morning” shows his ability to produce an irresistible flow and intense build-ups. For both tracks Mike Huckaby used his master weapon – the Waldorf Wave and Sample CD. Will destroy all clubs!

This is the 4th of 4 records representing the vinyl collectors edition of the Homewreckers album “American Ruhr”.

Guest appearances at the mic by the fantastic Kemo from Düsseldorf/Chicago, Neil Harris, aka Atlantis, label manager of Underground Resistance, and Dennis Legree from Cologne/N.Y.C make this album complete. The artwork was done by Cory Arcangel, a young digital artist from Brooklyn. The liner notes were written by Kodwo Eshun.

It comes with startingly deep and effective, but subtly structured, shifting rhythms and meters, with great energy, movement and grace. And, most important, with a bassline that will last FOREVER!

The Original Version shows best how the Homewreckers work – soulful, clear, intrinsically homegrown and utterly honest.

The remix works from Mark Flash and Bileebob, both DJs and producers from Detroit´s “Underground Resistance” camp, are techno house swingers in the old fashioned sense, but it is also more than that, because they add to their interpretation modern equipment and a wink in the eye.

It´s pure underground deep house – intense, abstract and dramatic. A vital alternative to the melodic clichés and rhythmic orthodoxy of the electronic music mainstream. No wonder that Felix Da Housecat and Marshall Jefferson supported those guys when they were teenagers!

Langenberg’s Remix gets the B-Side under way. Backed up by a strong beat it rolls steadily ahead with unflagging propulsion. Next up is “Hot Hot Hot”, an exciting up-tempo number which gives Kemo another opportunity to show his lyrical feeling while “Smile” slows down the pace easing into a down-home Hip-Hop affair.

This is the second of four records representing the vinyl collectors edition of the Homewreckers forthcoming album „American Ruhr“.
Kemo on Unique Records is a beautiful monster jam that will destroy dance floors all over the world. The Homewreckers style plows right over any preconceived notion you may have about the current funky underground grind.

“It´s About Time” is such a lusciously deep track where tradition and innovation meet. Tradition as in the soulful roots of 70s funk and house music, innovation as in the streamlined, sparse arrangements and shrewd use of technology. The Homewreckers truly master rhythm and space – and Chicago born Kemo fully adapts to the music and the atmosphere with his amazing spoken word poetry. Not only does he sound good, his lyrics can be experienced like a short film. As a unit, the Wreckers are examples of the discipline and feeling that make modern funk our most difficult performance art!

“Please Send Me Someone To Love” is a cool slap bass wonder transporting us into a dimension of seemingly endless travel. Keyboards, strings and washes of synthesizers are put together with uncanny precision. The bassline goes from heavy and heady to playful and quirky – always deliriously intoxicating.

The artwork is by Cory Arcangel. Cory is a Digital Artist who lives and works in Brooklyn. His work was featured in the 2004 Whitney Museum, and has also been exhibited in the Guggenheim Museum and “MoMA”. The artwork was designed on Lighning Paint, a clone of the 1984 paint application “mac paint” and the font is from the APPLE II GS.

Somebody called it “cheesy” the other day and he was damn right. The Homewreckers cut the same kind of cheese that Indeep, Soul II Soul, Zhane and Funkmaster Flex had on their plates when they kept the people on the dancefloor happy with a Mr-DJ-track. “WHEN THE VERSION COMES” strips the “WEEKEND” down to its essentials in a rub-a-dub-disco style that only lasts for a few minutes but … “WONDERYEARS” swings like a feather and is jazzed out to the max. The “Blue”-Mix comes with rich organic textures that make it easy to let your hair down. The “Dance”-Mix keeps the barber happy with a delicious 4/4 orientated groove.

PRESS

Number two in the “Rap Attack” series see the Homewreckers take on J Rawls’ “They Can’t See Me” [...] Hidden amongst the low riding four four of the Homewreckers opnening cut are jazz references and the more obvious hip hop feel, but overall it’s a sublime loose Idjut Boys meets Fatback dico funk out. [...] But the rhythmic mayhem stays with the Homewreckers for their “Bonus Dub”, which proves there’s still experimental fun to be had within the turgid combines of four four beats.
PRESS

Extrem deep!” (Groove/Germany)

DJ COMMENTS

“Brilliant house / disco stuff with Love Unlimited Orchestra style strings” (Gilles Peterson)

“The Homewreckers shit is dope! Well done.” (Tyler Askew, Atlantic Audio/SNC)

“Actually very good” (Nik Weston, Island Blue)

“Some neo-Philly good times. “Nobody Loves You…(Disco Mix)” is very good.” (Ashley Beedle – Various, Worldwide)

“A-side – superb, top notch house music with soul! B-side – Quality late night house music. All very good.” (Gordon Ritchie – Lowlife, Lifestyle, Fabric – Glasgow)

“Silky stuff getting full support! “Nobody Loves You…(Disco Mix)” is brilliant (personally and crowd-wise).” (Duncan Stumpy – Gutfest, Dorado Records – London)

“Interesting release. Retains old school vibe yet modernises it without cheesy filters etc. “Late Night Hype” – brilliant DJ tool – works well with IG Culture/People stuff.” (Matthew K – Interactive, Radioactive – Glasgow)

“Yes – ” Nobody Loves You …(Disco Mix)” with a beer in hand, head leaned against the speaker at 3am – I’ll have that! Brilliant.” (Tom Findlay – Kiss FM, Fabric etc – London)

“A really cool, quality piece of music. In my box for a long while. Both sides brilliant.” (Mr Morgan – Harter St, Homoelectric – Manchester)

“Truly a pleasure to listen to and play out. Lovely sound – dark and moody yet warm and enveloping. Hope they turn out an album of similar stuff in the future. I’m watching for that one. A long time in my box I forecast! ” (Nick Johnston – Homeless, Cul De Sac – Edinburgh)

Deep house fused with funky tempo and K&D-like keyboards. Great! (DJ Collision, London)

This record can be classified as an all time classic even before it has been released. Several times Felix has played the testpressing of this record before a live audience and time after time they started screaming when he played AA1 ‘Ruhrschnellweg’. This track has a nice buildup that fades into some very beautiful strings and moody melodies. This track plays with you emotions and will finally bring you to Lalaland. Do you remember the magnificent ‘Altered States’ by Ron Trent?

THEE BLAK LABEL, 12”

PRESS

"The AA1 side has a very tasty, very deep track that can pull emotional strings every time. The production is dark, but the stab note structure is strangely uplifting. House music in the original sense." (Dave Clark, i-D Magazine No. 147)

"Felix’s offshoot of Radikal Fear produces yet another simply fantastic minimal groove." (Stuart McMillan & Orde Meikle, i-D Magazine No. 147)

"One for the submariners. ‘Catch it’ is an anonymous attempt to combine Chicago jacking with abstract electronic textures, but it’s the awesome ‘Ruhrschnellweg’ which is attracting a lot of attention. Harnessing the most beautiful strings. Another triumph for Felix da Housecat." (Musik Magazine No 7, Dec 1995)

"Die Platte kommt aus dem Rote Liebe (Essen) Umfeld und liefert mit ‘Ruhrschnellweg’ ein gekonntes House-Stück ab, dessen tiefe, melodische Pianochord-Basslinie sich ganz und gar in die Zwischenräume der mächtigen Bassdrum setzt und dort fast verschwindet, eine gewisse mystische Tiefe schafft, die sympathisch ist. Die anderen Mixe sind im Chicago-Stil bzw. relaxter arrangiert. (Triple R, Frontpage, Nov 1995)
